The purpose of this study is to examine the semantic network of a fictional future war record in the interwar period between World War I and World War II. The main subject of study, Reiyo Higuchi’s “Novel, The Future of the US-Japan War (1920)”, is a fictional war record that envisions fictional World War II taking place around the Pacific Ocean immediately after the end of actual World War I. In the novel, a desire to escape from Japan’s global isolation is revealed. This is imaginable because it is a fiction, where interest in modern war and pre-modern narrative meet. In addition, even though enlightening the people for permanent peace was aimed, the disintegration of Western society and the unity of colored people in the novel are in line with pro-government editorials that encourage war under the guise of patriotism. The Future of the US-Japan War preaches that only a country capable of waging war can be proven to be a civilized country under the framework of civilization and barbarism. The Future of the US-Japan War, which originated from interest in modern warfare, created ‘Imaginary reality’ close to a pseudo-science.
